Why I march on MLK Day in Seattle
It’s a moving sight. Thousands of people, stretching block after block in Seattle’s Central District, of all backgrounds and ages, marching in the spirit of racial solidarity and the unfinished work of Martin Luther King Jr. Seattle’s MLK march — now in its 38th year — challenges us to answer the call to make the national holiday a “day on, not a day off.” Not a day for shopping or TV binges, but a day to reflect and act. 10 bills to watch in the 2020 Washington Legislative session
The Washington state legislature starts this week, and lawmakers have already gotten a head start on new legislation. Democrats and Republicans both plan on introducing healthcare, gun control, and other hot topic legislation as the 2020 presidential election looms. While it’s still too early to say what will thrive and what will die when lawmakers dip their feet into the paper pool, here are a few bills to keep an eye on this legislative session. 2019 saw fewer passengers on Washington State Ferries
The Washington State Ferries saw ridership fall 3.2% last year, held down by February’s snowstorm and ongoing waterfront construction and alternative ferry service from Kitsap Transit. The Seattle Times reports that State Ferries tallied 23.9 million passengers in 2019, down about 800,000 from 2018. Despite the decrease, officials said there’s no cause for concern. Microsoft unveils ambitious $1 billion plan to address climate change
Microsoft announced Thursday its plans to be carbon negative by 2030, as part of a $1 billion climate initiative. “The scientific consensus is clear. The world confronts an urgent carbon problem,” the company said in a news release, penned by Microsoft President Brad Smith. “Already, the planet’s temperature has risen by 1 degree centigrade. If we don’t curb emissions, and temperatures continue to climb, science tells us that the results will be catastrophic.” Continue reading at MyNorthwest.

Virginia legislature passes Equal Rights Amendment in historic vote
Both chambers of Virginia’s General Assembly passed the Equal Rights Amendment Wednesday, fulfilling a promise that helped Democrats seize control of the legislature and marking a watershed moment in the nearly century-long effort to add protections for women to the U.S. Constitution. Transportation committees met Monday and Tuesday to begin weighing cuts, delays and other budget maneuvers to balance the state’s transportation budget after voters passed I-976 to cut vehicle registration fees. I-976 is expected to reduce state transportation revenue by about $454 million between 2019 and 2021. Continue reading at The Seattle Times. (Ted S. Warren / The Associated Press)
