Want to make streets safer? Listen to those who have left crime behind
On Jan. 22, eight people were hit as 20 bullets flew from three gunmen in an armed dispute during rush hour on one of Seattle’s busiest intersections. Tanya Jackson, a woman who was called a “protector” of others and who had finally gotten some stability in her life, was shot and killed; a 9-year-old boy was injured. New Privacy Legislation Introduced in Washington State
A series of privacy bills have been introduced in Washington state, but they present conflicting regulatory visions and their sponsors don’t necessarily see eye-to-eye. After what was designed to be the state’s landmark privacy law failed to materialize last year, its primary sponsor, Sen. Reuven Carlyle, D-Seattle, has introduced Senate Bill 6281, which he hopes will be able to appeal to a diversity of stakeholders in its pursuit of an overarching policy framework. Washington’s natural disaster rate has increased, but here’s a way to help prepare
The frequency of FEMA-reported natural disasters within the state of Washington has nearly tripled since 2000, according to a recent study. Between 2000 and 2017, Washington saw 61 natural disasters, according to an analysis by insurance comparison website QuoteWizard, which looked at FEMA natural disaster data for the report. That tied with New Mexico for the fifth-highest number of natural disasters during the time, the study found, behind Texas (172), California (153), Oklahoma (122) and Florida (66). We may avoid the very worst climate scenario. But the next-worst is still pretty awful.
The year is 2100, and the world’s 12 billion people are still burning fossil fuels with abandon. Compared with preindustrial times, the planet has warmed by 4.5 degrees Celsius, or 8.1 degrees Fahrenheit. The atmosphere is filled with greenhouse gases, and parts of the Earth sometimes experience temperatures too extreme for humans. Continue reading at The Washington Post. (Wolfgang Rattay/Reuters)

House passes bill to cut vehicle pollution, increase number of electric cars
Washington motorists would use fuel that emits fewer greenhouse gases – and likely pay more for it – over the next 15 years under a proposal to reduce those pollutants that the House approved Wednesday. After more than three hours of contentious debate, Democrats pushed through a bill that tells the state Department of Ecology to set up a Clean Fuels Program limiting the amount of carbon dioxide and related greenhouse gases released by transportation fuels. New ‘head tax’? Proposed law would let King County tax large businesses to tackle homelessness
A new measure introduced in the Washington state Legislature Wednesday would allow King County to impose a tax of 0.1 to 0.2 percent on businesses on the total payroll of employees who earn $150,000 per year or more. The money would have to be used to pay for homelessness services, affordable housing, public safety, and behavioral health services. If passed, House Bill 2907 could allow the county to raise approximately $121 million per year, according to the King County Executive’s office. Continue reading at KUOW. (Flickr photo/amishrobot)

This January 2020 photograph provided by the Center for Whale Research shows a large male orca, known as L41 or Mega, surfacing in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Researchers said Tuesday that L41, who had sired many of the calves born to the Pacific Northwest’s southern resident orca population, was missing and presumed dead. The whales have been suffering from a death of Chinook salmon, and researchers say they are on the brink of extinction, with only 72 animals left. DAVID ELLIFRIT/CENTER FOR WHALE RESEARCH AP

Mega was the only adult male orca left in his immediate family and is now feared dead
Another southern resident orca, L41, is feared dead, according to the Center for Whale Research. The whale, born in 1977, was not seen during an encounter with its family by the center’s researchers on Friday. Because of his age, and the fact that he was thin when he was seen a year ago, ”we fear he may be gone and will consider him missing unless he shows up unexpectedly in an upcoming encounter,” the center reported. If L41 remains missing, that would bring the population of southern resident orcas to only 72, the second-lowest since the center first began its population census 45 years ago. Continue reading at The Olympian. Legislature making progress on bills addressing homelessness
Washington state lawmakers are making progress on legislation to “address the crisis” of homelessness, Democratic legislative leaders said Tuesday. Several bills are expected to move forward in the House and Senate that will “continue to move us in the direction where we are taking care of people who are experiencing homelessness,” state Rep. Monica Stonier said at a press conference. Continue reading at The Olympian.

State Sen. Liz Lovelett, D-Anacortes, and 14 other state legislators have asked the state Supreme Court to overturn a 1933 ruling that holds as unconstitutional the graduated income tax — a tax that rises in steps, with those having the highest income paying the highest percentage of tax. Swedish health care workers begin three-day strike
Under bright umbrellas and sheer plastic ponchos, striking nurses and other staff gathered in heavy rain outside Swedish Medical Center on First Hill to begin a three-day strike at 7 a.m. Tuesday. More than 200 strikers marched in circles in front of multiple entrances to the hospital, chanting slogans such as “We’re here! We’re strong! We’ll fight for patients all day long!” They cheered raucously when passing cars honked in support. The Service Employees International Union Healthcare 1199NW, which represents the 7,800 registered nurses, caregivers and staff, said the strike would be the largest for health-care workers in recent history. It comes after almost 10 months of bargaining with hospital management. Continue reading at The Seattle Times. (Ellen M. Banner / The Seattle Times)

Protections proposed in Washington Senate for domestic workers
In 2007, Adriana Cazorla, was working as a maid for an employer who held her against her will and sexually assaulted her, she said Monday as the Senate began considering a bill to protect domestic workers. Cazorla said this same employer also took explicit photos of young women by posing as the owner of a modeling agency. But he was actually selling the photos to other men. Cazorla said when she discovered what he was doing, he threatened to call immigration officers if she reported him. “I’m not scared anymore, a long time ago … I couldn’t tell my story,” said Cazorla, a former domestic worker who now has a green card and is a legal resident. Facebook will now show you exactly how it stalks you — even when you’re not using Facebook
ver suspect the Facebook app is listening to you? What we now know is even creepier. Facebook is giving us a new way to glimpse just how much it knows about us: On Tuesday, the social network made a long-delayed “Off-Facebook Activity” tracker available to its 2 billion members. It shows Facebook and sister apps Instagram and Messenger don’t need a microphone to target you with those eerily specific ads and posts — they’re all up in your business countless other ways.
