Angel Mullen, of Tacoma, during the State Office of Homeless Youth briefing at the Helen Sommers Building on the Capitol Campus in Olympia on Friday.

How can Washington better help young people who are homeless? Listen to their stories
Each year, about 1 in 4 young people in Washington state face a housing crisis within a year of leaving foster care, criminal justice facilities, or behavioral health institutions. The crisis for those between the ages of 12 and 24 means they sleep in emergency shelters, on the streets, in cars, in other unsafe or unstable places, or they “couch-surf,” moving from one place to another. Legislators, local officials consider fuel standard proposals that require cleaner gas, diesel
Sen. Christine Rolfes, D-Bainbridge Island, one of the co-sponsors of the Senate proposal, said the effect of the legislation would be “the same as taking millions of cars off the streets without taking millions of cars off the streets. It allows us to keep our quality of life just by being cleaner about how we go about our business.” Continue reading at Kitsap Sun. (Photo: Meegan M. Reid/Kitsap Sun)

Supreme Court upholds billions of dollars in transit funding
The state Supreme Court on Thursday upheld vehicle registration tax increases in the Puget Sound area, a decision that preserves billions of dollars in voter-approved money earmarked for light trail and other projects. State Senate passes bill to ban guns at childcare facilities
Childcare facilities would carry the same prohibitions on deadly weapons as K-12 schools under legislation passed Thursday by the state Senate. “When parents send their kids off to school, they expect these facilities and grounds to be safe and secure,” said Sen. Claire Wilson (D-Auburn), the bill’s sponsor. “The state already prohibits people from possessing firearms on K-12 school campuses. This bill simply extends that same common-sense policy to childcare facilities.” Continue reading at KOMO News. (AP Photo/Elaine Thompson)

Major expansion of sports gambling only at Indian casinos moves forward in Legislature
By a large margin, the state House of Representatives on Thursday night approved a bill to allow legal sports gambling sports only at tribal casinos. An expansion of gambling requires at least a three-fifths majority vote in each chamber. The House easily cleared that bar, approving HB 2638 by a 83-14 vote. The measure moves to a Senate committee. The Senate has a companion bill that it could send to the House, giving lawmakers two options to get a bill to Gov. Jay Inslee for his signature. Continue reading at The Olympian.

Judge rejects most of legal challenge to Eyman’s I-976
A King County Superior Court judge on Wednesday rejected most of a legal challenge to Tim Eyman’s Initiative 976, a measure that would steeply discount the price of car registrations while gutting transportation budgets across the state.Judge Marshall Ferguson said King County and a coalition of Washington cities had failed to carry the heavy burden of demonstrating that the $30 car tab measure was unconstitutional on most of their claims. Those claims included that the description of the initiative on the ballot was misleading and that the measure violated the Washington Constitution’s rule that initiatives be limited to one subject. Popularity of Washington state’s new paid family and sick leave law leads to processing backlog
Washington state’s new paid family and medical leave program is so popular, it’s causing problems. Since going live three weeks ago, more than 20,000 Washington state residents applied for the partial-wage replacement leave program. And the large volume of applications has led to longer than anticipated wait times for processing with the Employment Security Department – close to four weeks. But the state says it will make it up to those affected by the delay, paying applicants retroactively to the date of their leave, not when their application is approved. Bill to legalize sports gambling in Washington state advances to potential final House vote
Legalized sports gambling within Washington state’s tribal casinos took another step Tuesday toward becoming reality this year. A House appropriations committee voted 25-7 to forward sports gambling bill HB 2638 to a possible full floor vote before the March 13 end of this year’s shortened legislative session. Commissioner: Officials overzealous in Iranian border stops
U.S. Customs and Border Protection Acting Commissioner Mark Morgan said Tuesday that border officials in Washington state “got a little overzealous” when they detained Iranian and Iranian-American travelers at the U.S.-Canada border last month. Justice Department brings new suits over sanctuary policies
The Justice Department ratcheted up legal pressure Monday on local governments over “sanctuary” policies that hinder federal immigration officers, bringing two new lawsuits and launching a coordinated messaging campaign to highlight an election-year priority of President Donald Trump. Declaring that law enforcement officers are being “put in harm’s way by these ideologically driven policies,” Attorney General William Barr said the Trump administration is suing the state of New Jersey and the county that is home to Seattle over immigration policies that offer protections to immigrants in the U.S. illegally.
