After weeks of social distancing to help curb the spread of coronavirus, it’s only natural a few of us – okay, maybe a lot of us – might be thinking: What’s the harm in visiting just one friend? State to release up to 950 nonviolent offenders early in response to COVID-19
The state plans to release 600 to 950 nonviolent offenders early to free up space in state prisons to fight the COVID-19 outbreak. In a report required by the state Supreme Court, the attorney general’s office said the plan covers inmates with nonviolent and/or drug or alcohol offenses whose release dates are within six to eight months. We do not know enough. How many will be infected? How many will die? Our best guesses are still only guesses, overshadowed by uncertainty. How many have already been infected? Tens of thousands of tests have been run, but nowhere near enough to map the virus’ full spread. Do doctors and nurses have the protection they need? You may have heard about a couple of recent studies that suggest that our social distancing measures appear to be making a difference in slowing the spread of COVID-19 in King County. That’s encouraging news. The studies also emphasize that we need to continue to stay strong with the stay at home order if we are to continue to succeed in decreasing and delaying the outbreak peak. Inmates at a Washington state prison staged a large protest following new coronavirus diagnoses at the facility and and health officials say they continue to see high numbers of cases in the state’s long-term care facilities. The Technology 202: MIT researchers unveil effort to trace spread of the coronavirus
Researchers want to use the same technology that powers Find My iPhone to alert you if you’ve come into contact with someone who has tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology-led effort would allow infected people to volunteer to upload a log of their recent Bluetooth signals to a database. Other people would then be able to scan that database and see if they crossed paths with an infected person. They would also receive a notification alerting them they were exposed.
