First museum of Latinx history in Washington, opening in Seattle, tells overlooked story
When Rogelio Riojas looks at 1950s farmworker cabins, transplanted from Eastern Washington to a new museum of Latinx history in Washington, things quickly get personal. Two small shingled cabins — outfitted with furniture, dishes and other objects from the time — are not just history for Riojas, president and CEO of Sea Mar Community Health Centers. They’re a snapshot of his childhood. Read more in the Seattle Times

Learning how endangered orcas hunt could be the key to saving them
In the race to save Puget Sound’s starving southern resident killer whale population — down to 73 members among three pods — researchers and policymakers have pitched a broad assortment of science-backed solutions. Key among them: increasing the abundance of endangered chinook salmon, the southern residents’ food of choice; minimizing pollution; and regulating boat traffic and whale watching so orcas can live and feed in peace. A flavored vape ban was proposed 4 years ago and failed. Will lawmakers pass it now?
On March 16, 2015, John Wiesman, the state’s Secretary of Health, asked lawmakers to approve a bill that included a ban on flavored vaping products. “I am ringing the alarm bell on the use of vaping products by our youth,” said Wiesman. “I need you to take action this session.” It didn’t happen. A year later, the House passed the bill requested by Gov. Jay Inslee and Attorney General Bob Ferguson, but it died in the Senate. Read more in the News Tribune

Climate change will spread disease faster. Scientists want to keep us informed — and unafraid
When the first locally acquired case of Valley fever was diagnosed in Washington in 2010, health officials were stunned. The disease had appeared in the state only in patients who had recently traveled to the warm and dry corners of the Southwest, said Heather Hill, a communicable disease expert for the Benton-Franklin Health District in south central Washington. But since that time, the disease has been found east of the Cascade Mountains, where an active agricultural industry, and hot, dry summers provide conditions for the disease to thrive. “It’s probably salted all across Eastern Washington,” Hill said.
