If Washington state approves a massive expansion of legal sports gambling, Major League Baseball wants a slice of the money so it can “protect the integrity of the game” from potential scandals. Sharp Cuts in Immigration Threaten U.S. Economy and Innovation
The long-run health of the United States economy is in serious danger from a self-inflicted wound: the Trump administration’s big cuts in immigration. The latest data indicate that immigration to the United States fell 70 percent last year to only 200,000 people — the lowest level in more than a decade. Major causes of the decline, experts say, are the administration’s restrictions as well as the unwelcoming tone set by the president himself.

When is daylight saving time? Do you need to turn clock back in Washington, given the new law? Your questions answered
Yes, you do have to “fall back” and change your clocks Nov. 3, even though the Washington state Legislature passed a law earlier this year to stay on daylight time permanently. The law, which passed with strong bipartisan support, was signed by Gov. Jay Inslee in May. But under federal law, states aren’t allowed to stay on permanent daylight time without congressional approval. Continue reading in the Seattle Times

Orca task force adds 13 recommendations at final meeting as ‘biological extinction’ looms
Their goal is clear: to prevent Puget Sound’s iconic Southern Resident killer whales from going extinct. Solving that problem is anything but simple. The task force convened by Gov. Jay Inslee to save the orcas added 13 new recommendations this week, at its final meeting. The additions to the group’s so-called “Year 2 Report” cover more than 100 pages, adding climate change and population growth to the list of issues complicating orca recovery. Continue reading, or listen, on KNKX

Legislators passed eviction protections. Washington landlords found loopholes
When their phones started ringing Aug. 2, tenant advocates across Washington found themselves as confused as their frightened clients. The calls came from different parts of the state: Tacoma, Seattle, Bellingham and Spokane. But the nature of the phone calls was strangely similar — tenants had unexpectedly received 14-day “pay or vacate” notices the day after rent was due. Most were on fixed incomes, their property managers aware that Social Security or disability payments don’t always arrive on the first of the month. Some had already paid rent but received a notice anyway. Continue reading in Crosscut
