OLYMPIA – A smarter approach to addressing Washington’s housing shortage is possible thanks to HB 1491, or Transit
Oriented Development, passing the Senate with bipartisan support. Sponsored by Rep. Julia Reed (D-Seattle) the bill encourages smart development around transit stops throughout the state.
“We need to build one million more housing units to meet our current demands,” said Rep. Reed. “This kind of smart development around transit hubs is not only going to get us the units we need but it’s going to provide denser more walkable neighborhoods that reduce pollution and help residents stay healthy.”
The legislation also encourages the development of multi-family residences and carries affordability mandates.
“Getting this bill to the Governor’s desk is a win for the people of Washington,” said Rep. Reed. “I look forward to seeing the positive impacts for years to come.”
