OLYMPIA – Workers in Washington could soon use their paid sick leave for immigration-related matters, thanks to Senate passage of House Bill 1875. The bill, now heading to the Governor’s desk, allows employees to use their earned sick leave to attend judicial or administrative immigration hearings, including those for family members, without the fear of losing income or their job.
Rep. Osman Salahuddin (D-Redmond), the bill’s prime sponsor, emphasized the importance of ensuring that workers can engage in crucial immigration proceedings without financial or professional repercussions. “This bill increases equity and access to the legal system, protects workers from retaliation, and promotes economic stability for immigrant families,” said Rep. Salahuddin.
House Bill 1875 reflects Washington’s commitment to justice, equity, and a stable workforce by acknowledging the unique challenges faced by immigrant workers.
