OLYMPIA— Today the House passed HB 1222 sponsored by Rep. Chris Stearns (D-Auburn) that carves out exemptions to the Public Records Act for Washington’s Gambling Commission to protect against fraud, robberies, and cybersecurity threats.
“Technology has transformed our world, and with that comes increased risk,” said Stearns. “Providing additional exemptions around sensitive information will help protect consumers and businesses from fraud, robberies, and cybersecurity threats.”
The Public Records Act is a tool for increasing transparency across public agencies, some information should be exempt in order to prevent disclosure of information that could be used to harm innocent people. This bill helps provide clear guidance around what information can be considered sensitive and protected.
The bill was passed in the House on Thursday, February 13 with a vote of 73 to 21.
