The 2024 legislative session has started! Here’s what’s happened so far.

Dear neighbors,

The 2024 legislative session began yesterday, and the House of Representatives got right to work. We passed three bills on our first day, including HB 1455, a bill I wrote last year to ban child marriage.

This was possible because we came ready to serve Washingtonians on Day 1 with bills that had bipartisan support and are anticipated in the Senate. As the majority floor leader, I look forward to serving the House and the people we represent with this level of dedication and focus.

Hearing on HB 2144

Recycling bottles and cans seems like common sense—but our state doesn’t have the right laws or programs to really do the job. That’s why I wrote House Bill 2144, which sets up a deposit return program. This works in other states, providing an incentive for people to turn in their cans or collect them from the street. Less litter, more recycling! The bill was heard in the House Environment & Energy Committee at 4 p.m. on Jan. 9. You can go back and watch the hearing by visiting TVW.org.

How to Engage

Ways to engage in the 2024 legislative session

Did you know that any member of the public can testify on a bill when it comes up for a hearing in committee? Washington has one of the most open legislatures in the country, which means it’s easy to make your voice heard. There are plenty of other ways to tune in as well, from watching on TVW to connecting with my office by phone or email.

I hope you’ll take some time this session to tune in and watch your democracy at work!
