Street sworn into office in Olympia

OLYMPIA—Rep. Chipalo Street (D-Seattle) was sworn into office for the first time on Monday, January 9th in the House chambers. He represents the 37th Legislative District which covers southeast Seattle, one of the most diverse districts in the country.

“Washingtonians deserve a state with affordable housing, excellent schools, an equitable tax code, and a protected environment,” said Street. “The path forward is a Washington that provides economic prosperity, climate justice, and equity for all its residents. I am excited to lead us towards this bright future.”

Street works for Microsoft in the office of the CTO advising senior leadership on emerging technology. He has been granted four patents for his work at Microsoft and started the Azure IoT Edge product which helped direct Microsoft’s approach to edge computing. His passion for digital equity inspired him to apply his love of innovation in the community by co-founding the Teacher Scientist Partnership at Technology Access Foundation Academy. He also owns a small real estate company that practices progressive values and is a professional soccer referee.

Street is excited to bring his broad professional experience to the committees on which he will serve for the 2023 legislative session: Finance Committee (vice chair), Innovation, Community & Economic Development, & Veterans, and Environment & Energy. In just the first week, he is already using his background to sponsor bills that protect healthcare data (HB 1155), increase housing supply and protect tenants (HB 1110, HB 1111, HB 1124), expand apprenticeships that support good jobs (HB 1013, HB 1050), and protect fellow sports officials (HB 1096).

The Washington Legislature began the 2023 legislative session on Monday, January 9th.
