The state capital budget (House Bill 1075) funds $4.18 billion in construction projects around the state. Those projects are vital to our schools, universities, parks, environment and economy.
Now that the House voted 92-1 to pass House Bill 1075, the legislation is in the Senate.
Unless the Republican-controlled Senate takes action, Washington state won’t have a construction budget this year.
Here’s what is at stake:
- A record $1 billion to build new public schools, which would help satisfy the Supreme Court’s McCleary decision to fully fund our schools—you can’t hire new teachers without building new classrooms for our state’s 1.1 million school kids
- $800 million in projects at our colleges and universities
- Local construction projects in every corner of the state
- Affordable housing funding as the housing crisis is reaching its peak
- Projects to bring safe, clean water to communities throughout Washington
- 75,000 jobs in construction, engineering and natural resources over the life of the $4.18 billion in projects (an estimated 19,000 jobs per year)
What the construction budget funds in your community
The fiscal.wa.gov website has a map of projects by county or legislative district. That map doesn’t tell the whole story–for example, the $1 billion in school construction projects isn’t included.
Below you’ll find a list of projects in broken down into all 49 legislative districts, including known school projects. If a school district passes a levy in the next two years, those new projects would also be eligible for state matching funds via the capital budget.
