Does your health care plan meet federal requirements?

Now that the open enrollment deadline for health care coverage has come and gone, some folks are wondering if their plans will exempt them, or if they’ll have to pay the tax penalty.

The new health care law requires people to have a plan that includes minimum essential coverage, but defining what that means can be confusing. To make it easier, the Office of the Insurance Commissioner posted on its website the list of the types of plans that meet the Affordable Care Act requirements. If you have any doubts, check the list to see if you’re in compliance or not.

The Insurance Commissioner also points out that while the enrollment period has ended for most people, there are circumstances that may allow you to enroll in or change your plan during 2014. To find out if you qualify for this special enrollment, go here.

You can also contact the Insurance Commissioner’s Consumer Advocates for more information at 800-562-6900 or online.
