Legislative Update: 2 Appointments, Interim News & Job Opening

Dear friends and neighbors,

I hope you are enjoying summer so far! It’s been a while since I’ve provided you with an update on what I’m doing for you as your state representative, so I hope you enjoy today’s update.

Appointments to Two Seats

Last month I was appointed to serve in two seats: one appointment is to the Washington Marine Resources Advisory Council (MRAC) and the second appointment is to the Washington State Leadership Board. I look forward to hitting the ground running in serving in these two roles.

The Washington Marine Resources Advisory Council helps to maintain a sustainable and coordinated focus on ocean acidification. With 24 members representing diverse interests and entities from around the state, the advisory council provides recommendations on how to best address ocean acidification and protect our state’s marine resources.

The Washington State Leadership Board, a trustee agency of Washington State, specializes in delivering equity-focused leadership programs for the State of Washington. It is best known for bestowing official honors on behalf of the state, such as the Washingtonian of the Year, as well as several free youth leadership programs. The board serves several important roles, including acting as official ambassadors of trade, tourism, and goodwill for the state, as well as working to expand educational, sports and employment opportunities for youth, veterans, and people with disabilities.

I am honored to be appointed to these boards and am eager to join my colleagues in this important work. Whatcom County has a thriving maritime economy and is home to diverse coastal habitat. I look forward to bringing values and views from the northwest corner of the state to the MRAC.

Furthermore, the Washington State Leadership Board serves an important role in cultivating and recognizing leaders throughout our great state. I can’t wait to help foster civic engagement and service in this role.

My Interim Schedule

Rep. Alicia Rule and I recently met with Washington’s Public Works Board to check out the Pepin Creek Main Street Bridge in Lynden and Ferndale’s Wastewater Treatment Plant, both of which received support through state programs.

The time in between legislative sessions, known as interim, is an important time of year to meet with constituents, visit local businesses and organizations, and see firsthand projects in-district. I always enjoy seeing so many of you when I’m out and about in the community, and I have stayed busy so far this interim traveling throughout Whatcom County, including but not limited to: participating in town hall events in Bellingham and Kendall, attending the Blessing of the Fleet ceremony in Blaine, attending Lummi Nation’s First Salmon Ceremony, joining Gov. Inslee in touring projects located along Bellingham’s waterfront, meeting with Whatcom Family Farmers and CHS Northwest in Lynden regarding agriculture issues, providing a legislative update to the Bellingham City Council and the Whatcom Realtors, meeting with WSDOT regarding the SR 542 highway project, and joining local leaders at the Whatcom Opioid Summit.

I look forward to continuing this important work during interim, and you can also follow my legislative Facebook page for periodic updates.

We’re Hiring!

My legislative assistant, Hayden Jenkins, is moving on. He has been absolutely fantastic to work with, and I am grateful for his service in my office. And while good-byes are always hard, the good news is he is remaining involved in important public service work in our state. In his own words:

“I am moving over to Sen. Patty Murray’s office to work as the Northwest Washington Director. It’s been such an honor to work with Rep. Timmons on behalf of the people of the 42nd legislative district and Whatcom County. Rep. Timmons is an incredible advocate for our community, and I look forward to following his continued work in the Legislature and to working with him and other local leaders in my new role.”

We are hiring! Are you interested in working with me or know someone who would be a good candidate? Click here to check out the job opening.

Best wishes,
