Friends and neighbors,
The 2025 Legislative Session is off and running! I am looking forward to working with my constituents and colleagues to meet the needs of Whatcom County, our students, and our transportation infrastructure.
Supporting student success through instruction in self-resiliency skills
Student well-being and success is a priority of mine and ensuring that students develop skills that help them in their education and career is essential. Children today face numerous challenges that their parents and grandparents couldn’t even imagine 20-30 years ago, and as adults, our job is to make sure they are prepared to interact with their piers, advocate for their needs, and treat everyone with respect and dignity.

Self-resiliency skills are proven to increase academic engagement, reduce bullying and reduce anxiety and depression for students. In short, these help students learn, reduce conflict in school and help create a more fulfilling experience for everyone. That is why I am proud to sponsor HB 1590 this session to support student success through instruction in self-resiliency skills.
This legislation will help educators as they work to teach social management, self-awareness, and emotional resiliency skills in our schools. I look forward to sharing more information about this bill as it moves through the legislative process.
