Expanding Representation on the Correctional Industries Advisory Committee

OLYMPIA – Expanding on the spirit of Nothing About Us, Without Us, House Bill 1185 has passed the House. Introduced by Rep. Mary Fosse (D-Everett), the bill strengthens the Correctional Industries Advisory Committee by adding two new voting members from underrepresented populations with direct lived experience.

Under the new law, the Governor will appoint these two members to serve three-year terms. Their inclusion is designed to provide valuable firsthand insights into the challenges and opportunities within Correctional Industries, helping to inform the Department of Corrections, the advisory committee, and drive meaningful improvements.

“This is an exciting step forward,” said Rep. Fosse. “Having individuals with lived experience at the table brings a unique and necessary perspective to the Correctional Industries Advisory Committee. Their input will be instrumental in advising on processes and policies that foster real and lasting change.”

By amplifying the voices of those most affected, HB 1185 facilitates the opportunity for more effective policymaking, identifies gaps in current programs, and addresses employment barriers faced by formerly incarcerated individuals.

House Bill 1185 heads to the Senate for further consideration. Watch my floor remarks:
