Every Child Matters: A Lesson from my Grandmother

Friends,

When I came to the legislature, one of my top priorities was helping kids. I truly believe every child matters. It is a lesson my parents and my grandmother taught me as a child. Last Monday, I had the honor of giving remarks on the House floor in honor of Children’s Day. Click below to watch me deliver those remarks.

Helping kids who are homeless

Every child matters, that lesson that my grandmother taught me rings true. There are children in our schools and on our streets who are homeless. They are victims of difficult situations and need help to break the cycle of poverty. That is why I introduced HB 1574, which increases access to resources for children who are homeless or vulnerable. HB 1574 expands the eligibility for children who are homeless or vulnerable to access childcare and early learning programs.

Research consistently shows that investments made at an early age give our youth the best opportunity be their greatest selves. Providing access to quality preschool, early-learning supports, and childcare for our most vulnerable kids are the best investments we can make to mitigate and prevent barriers to a stable, healthy, and thriving future for our children.

The House Human Services & Early Learning Committee passed HB 1574 earlier this month. It now awaits passage by the House Appropriations Committee.

As always, you can contact me, or my Legislative Assistant Zach Hall, at Lisa.Callan@leg.wa.gov or 360-786-7876. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,

Rep. Lisa Callan
