With unemployment rates at levels not seen since the Great Depression, how much help is available to workers who have been affected? It varies tremendously from state to state. Tepatasi Vaina sees a bitter irony for sex workers right now: For many of the people she works with, the industry pre-coronavirus was their safest option. She works as a program manager with the United Territories of Pacific Islanders Alliance (UTOPIA), a queer and trans Pacific Islander-led advocacy organization that began helping sex workers in Washington state after seeing a desire for aid and community among them some years ago. Labor Day 2020 lived up to its name if you’re a firefighter. It was a day that set up for numerous fires in central and eastern Washington that have burned tens of thousands of acres, and possibly many more. Fire rages through Malden, leaving much of the small farming town in ruins
A wildfire decimated the small town of Malden on Monday, destroying an estimated 70% of homes in the northern Whitman County community and leaving behind scorched piles of rubble. Whitman County Sheriff Brett Myers said the Babb Road Fire started in Spokane County before spreading across the county line and raging through Malden and the neighboring town of Pine City. UW releases first COVID-19 global forecast
On Thursday, the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) released its first COVID-19 global projections, predicting nearly 770,00 lives worldwide could be saved between Sept. 3 and Jan. 1 by people wearing masks and social distancing. Researchers said deaths could reach 2.8 million by Jan. 1, which is about 1.9 million more from now until the end of the year. Continue reading at KIRO 7.

Yakima County health officials warned Thursday against people lowering their guard to the threat of COVID-19 over the Labor Day weekend. In recent weeks daily case numbers have been consistently low, relative to June and July, allowing the county to add new activities such as indoor dining and small outdoor gatherings to its modified Phase 1 status of the state’s Safe Start program.
