As complaints pour in about police at Seattle protests, city will withdraw request that could lift federal oversight
On the sixth day of major protests in Seattle over the death of George Floyd, a Black man killed by a white police officer in Minnesota, city officials announced Wednesday they would withdraw a request that could have cleared the way to lift eight years of federal oversight of the Seattle Police Department. Hong Kong people defy ban on Tiananmen vigil to honor massacre victims
Tens of thousands of people, candles in hand, descended on a park and other locations across Hong Kong to commemorate China’s massacre of pro-democracy protesters in Tiananmen Square 31 years ago, defying the city’s first ban on the vigil, ostensibly due to the coronavirus pandemic. Shouting pro-democracy slogans, they drowned out announcements warning that gatherings of more than eight are illegal in the park and ignored nearby police in hopes of preserving Hong Kong’s fragile freedoms before they are forever gone. ‘We deserve better than this.’ People gather to remember Tacoma’s Manuel Ellis
On the Tacoma corner where Manuel Ellis drew his last breath while being restrained by police, hundreds gathered Wednesday evening to demand justice. It was a vigil the family wanted to hold since the 33-year-old died March 3. They decided it was time after learning the official cause of death — respiratory arrest due to hypoxia due to physical restraint, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office. Our 400-year nightmare demands a new American Dream
Black families are assassinated every day in this country. We work multiple jobs for generations to move our families into homes we can beautify and turn into sanctuaries. We raise millions of well-educated children, despite the abysmal, white supremacist conditions in their schools. We work in jobs surrounded by white supremacists who have neither the curiosity nor the empathy to understand how much harder our path is than theirs. Every day every member of our household steps out into a nation that has recklessly strewn economic, educational, financial and psychological land mines all along our way. Continue reading at Crosscut. (Matt M. McKnight)

George Floyd protests spotlight need for police reform, even in times of coronavirus
If the events of the past week have taught us anything, it’s that now is not the time to take our foot off the gas of police accountability. Washington Gov. Jay Inslee puts on his face mask after speaking to the media, Wednesday, May 20, 2020, in Tumwater, Wash., about the state’s effort at contact tracing amid the coronavirus pandemic. THE SEATTLE TIMES VIA AP, POOL STEVE RINGMAN

“We can’t allow violence to hijack peaceful protest,” Gov. Inslee says
Those who have committed violent acts during the demonstrations in Seattle and other cities “need to be criminally prosecuted as appropriate and they will be,” the governor said at a press conference. “We will not allow that to obscure the justice of the underlying protest; the peaceful protesters’ efforts to challenge all of us to raise our eyes on the prize to have a more just society.” Continue reading at The Bellingham Herald. Inslee expected to issue new guidance on Phase 2; Snohomish County plans to apply for reopening amid coronavirus crisis
Gov. Jay Inslee is poised to release new guidance as soon as Friday about when Washington’s largest counties may be able to begin lifting the economic and social restrictions that have been in place for more than two months. Most of Washington’s 39 counties already have moved on to the second phase of Inslee’s four-phase reopening plan. But the state’s three biggest counties, among others, have coronavirus infection rates that remain stubbornly above the threshold Inslee laid out as among the criteria for a variance from his “stay home” order.
