First day of no school: How Washington school districts are responding to coronavirus closures
By Tuesday, the first day of Gov. Jay Inslee’s mandate to close K-12 schools statewide, school districts still grappled with their new challenge: how to carry on serving their students’ basic needs without holding a school day. Even in places like Seattle Public Schools, whose closure announcement predated the governor’s six-week order to shut down, school employees had only a matter of hours to respond before their buildings locked indefinitely. Legislature tackled other issues along with COVID-19
Washington’s 2020 legislative session can be divided into two distinct parts: before cases of COVID-19 were discovered in the state, and after. In that first half – which by the time the Legislature adjourned Thursday evening seemed months, not weeks, ago – there were big concerns like growing numbers of homeless residents in urban and rural areas, a delay in transportation projects and worries about what was being done with personal data on the internet. Continue reading at The Spokesman-Review. (Rachel La Corte)

What Passed, What Didn’t In 2020 Washington Legislature (Hint: Coronavirus Changed Plans)
What a difference 60 days makes. When Washington lawmakers arrived in Olympia in mid-January for a short election-year session, the state’s economy was riding high, homelessness and housing were top of mind and there was talk of trying to expel Republican state Rep. Matt Shea from the House. As the Legislature adjourned Thursday, 60 days felt like a lifetime ago. A surreal “new normal” had taken hold as Washington finds itself in the grips of a global coronavirus pandemic — which poses a threat not just to the public, but also to the economy and to state revenues. Continue reading at Northwest Public Broadcasting. (Ted S. Warren)

Bars, gyms and more ordered closed in Washington state
All gatherings with more than 50 people will be prohibited in Washington state beginning Monday when Gov. Jay Inslee is expected to sign an emergency proclamation to help stop the spread of COVID-19. The order will not apply to restaurants, which will be able to provide take-out and delivery services, but in-person dining will be prohibited. Additionally, grocery stores and pharmacies will remain open. Continue reading at The Federal Way Mirror.

Coronavirus overshadows state lawmakers’ many hits and misses
The 2020 regular legislative session is coming to a close. It didn’t unfold the way anyone thought it would, nor is it ending as any predicted it might. Democrats arrived in January with ambitions of using their majorities in the House and Senate to eliminate the death penalty, ban high-capacity gun magazines and expel rabble-rousing Republican Rep. Matt Shea. They also cautiously hoped to enact a clean fuel standard. Continue reading at The Everett Herald. (Ted S. Warren)

‘Nothing short of torture’: WA to restrict youth solitary confinement
state House bill to limit the use of youth solitary confinement in juvenile detention facilities has passed both chambers of the Legislature, as the end of the 2020 session draws near. The legislation, sponsored by the Office of the Attorney General, must now be signed by Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee in order to be made law. Spokespersons from Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s office testified during public hearings about the necessity of limiting, if not prohibiting, the use of solitary confinement on juveniles. Transportation budget passes, could end ‘pause’ on major highway projects
A $10.3 billion budget designed to resume work on transportation projects on “pause” because of last year’s initiative to reduce fees and taxes for vehicle license tabs passed the Legislature with overwhelming majorities by both chambers on Wednesday. The budget “solves a huge problem” from Initiative 976 but only for a year, Senate Transportation Chairman Steve Hobbs, D-Lake Stevens, said. “It’s a budget that works for this year, but we’ve got a lot of work to do in the coming years,” he warned. Continue reading at The Spokesman-Review. (Tyler Tjomsland)
