It happened 2,000 miles away, but the Oct. 12 killing of Atatiana Jefferson hit the Rev. Kelle Brown hard. Jefferson, a 28-year-old Black woman, was in her Fort Worth, Texas, home playing video games with her nephew when she was shot by a white police officer, who was called to the home by a concerned neighbor. Washington will still turn clocks back despite Daylight Saving Time law
Washington lawmakers may have approved permanent Daylight Saving Time last spring, but you will still have to turn your clocks back Nov. 3. That’s because Washington can’t actually do away with standard time unless Congress gives approval. Federal law allows states to opt out of Daylight Saving Time, but it doesn’t allow states to do the opposite. Hawaii and Arizona both operate on standard time year-round. Read and watch more on KING5

‘Sitting in class hungry’: Schools wary of Trump plan to end free school lunches for some
Nearly 1 million low-income students would lose automatic access to free school lunches under a proposal from President Donald Trump’s administration that aims to limit the number of people receiving federal food stamps. And advocates say even more could lose free meals as the implications of the cuts ripple across low-income schools. But the Trump administration says those concerns are overblown. State receives additional $2.5 million to help clear rape kit backlog
A new federal grant will fund work to end Washington’s rape kit backlog and support a new effort to add DNA profiles of thousands of offenders to a national database. Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s office will receive $2.5 million in federal grants for the state’s sexual assault kit program. Of that, $1 million will fund the effort to add DNA profiles of thousands of convicted offenders — court-ordered DNA tests that still haven’t been collected — to the federal DNA evidence database known as CODIS, or Combined DNA Index System.
