LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: Upcoming Town Hall, New ID Law Goes into Effect, & Session Deadlines

Dear Neighbors,

Over the last two weeks, we’ve crossed two major legislative deadlines – fiscal cutoff, the last chance for bills affecting state spending or revenue to clear committee; and policy cutoff, the last day for policy bills to pass committee. These deadlines keep the legislative process efficient and focused.

With only 57 days remaining in the legislative session, I’d like to provide you with an update on the work of the legislature so far and how we’re building an affordable and inclusive future in our state. Please join me and my seatmates for an upcoming town hall on Saturday March 15th at the Mt. Vernon Library Commons, from 11 AM to 12 PM. This is also a great opportunity to ask questions and hear about issues impacting your household.

If you require any accommodations or translation services, please email my legislative assistant, Amanda. Parking will be available in the garage through the entrance off S 3rd Street, just to the east of the building. If you can’t make it to this in-person town hall, Senator Lovelett, Rep. Lekanoff, and I will be hosting a telephone town hall on March 26th. Stay tuned for call-in details in my next update!

Supporting Education Funding

I often hear from constituents about the need for better funding for K-12 schools, and I couldn’t agree more. As a parent, I’ve seen firsthand that many school districts don’t receive enough funding to provide the quality education our kids deserve. That’s why the House is considering several bills to address these gaps—including increased funding for special education, more support for materials, supplies, and operating costs, and greater flexibility for local enrichment levies.

In a perfect world, we would love to do all these things, but we must prioritize limited money.  Part of my job is hearing from local superintendents, teachers, and school board members – and I’m keeping these lines of communication open as we try to find the best solution.

Video Update

Improving grid reliability, affordability, and transmission capacity is critical to accelerate the transition to clean energy in Washington state. One of my bills, House Bill 1673, helps us do just that. Learn more in this recent video update!

Real ID 2025

In Washington State, on May 7, 2025, the federal REAL ID Act  goes into effect nationwide. Beginning on that date, if you don’t have a REAL ID-compliant driver license or ID card, you won’t be able to fly in the U.S. or enter a restricted federal facility. Click here to learn more or visit click here to see if you’re ready for this change.
