OLYMPIA– Rep. Alex Ramel was elected by his peers in the House Democratic Caucus as Deputy Majority Whip for the next two years, beginning with the 2021 legislative session. With Democrats retaining the majority in the Washington House of Representatives, they will remain the majority caucus.
Ramel (D-Bellingham) was appointed to fill a vacancy in the legislature for the 2020 session in January of this year. With his election to the seat in November, he will now join the majority caucus leadership team. As Deputy Majority Whip, his responsibilities include working with the Majority Whip and members to bring legislation to the floor, count votes, and understand where the majority caucus stands on bills.
“The whip’s job is to work with other Democratic House Members to see where they stand and help develop consensus around legislation as it moves forward in the process,” said Ramel. “I am excited to work with the other members of the leadership team to advance the priorities of the Democratic Caucus. While we might all be Democrats, we represent unique and diverse districts across the state and it will be my role to help get our Caucus on the same page.”
Ramel will join Rep. Marcus Riccelli (D-Spokane) who was elected Majority Whip. Elections for Assistant Whips will be help in the coming weeks.
The 40th Legislative District covers San Juan County as well as parts of Skagit and Whatcom counties including Anacortes and portions of Bellingham Mount Vernon and Burlington.
