Supporting Conservation

Friends,

Many of those who attended our community coffees wanted to know about our conservation and clean energy efforts. Beyond the significant steps the legislature took on clean energy, orca recovery, and conservation investments, I successfully sponsored a series of conservation bills that passed the legislature.

One of my major accomplishments this past session was to study and compile a more complete analysis and inventory of how our natural and working lands reduce carbon. This is important as we look to address the problems of climate change and how much carbon is being sequestered in our state. Another included a bill to allow conservation districts to work together on engineering projects. This means they can be more cost-efficient and are better able to coordinate on larger projects that cross districts.  I also passed legislation to ensure compostable and non-compostable products are labeled clearly. This makes it easier to make informed decisions about our purchases and packaging, as well as knowing what bin to throw it away in.

The quality of our air, water, and forests are important to our way of life in eastern King County. Helping to ensure we are supporting good conservation practices preserves that way of life. I am proud of the conservation legislation we passed this year because it helps maintain the beauty that drew many of us to this part of the state.
