OLYMPIA – In debate over amendments to the House budget, Federal Way legislator Rep. Kristine Reeves voted with Republicans to support increased funding for sexual assault prevention education programs.
“I have two kids, both under the age of five, and I worry about them every minute I’m not with them,” said Reeves. “We need to be fighting to protect our children and education is one of the best tools we can employ. Our kids need programs that help prevent sexual abuse and, if they are survivors of assault, how to report it to the proper authorities. I’m proud to support a budget that puts our children and our families first.”
The amendments, offered by Republicans, provide funding to develop a curriculum in state schools to help prevent sexual abuse of children and requires the Department of Health to develop programming to reduce the likelihood of child sexual assault.
The overall budget fully funds K-12 education, state economic development programs, freeze college tuition costs and increase financial aid, and funds the “Wounded Warrior Shared Leave” bill by Rep. Reeves which passed out of the House earlier this year.
The budget passed 50-48 and is now awaiting negotiation between House and Senate leaders.
