OLYMPIA – Help with college textbooks is on its way for families of armed forces members lost, or veterans and active duty National Guard members seriously disabled, during their service. Rep. Kristine Reeves, D-Federal Way, passed HB 2009, which provides a $500 stipend to help cover the cost of books to Gold Star family members.
Currently, those Gold Star family members attending college can be eligible for a tuition waiver at a Washington state school. But, the rising cost of housing and books can still strain the family budget—especially when one parent is deceased or unable to work due to serious disability.
“The sacrifices of the men and women who serve this country can never be repaid, but with this bill, we’re taking another step in the direction of doing the right thing for these families,” said Reeves, who has several family members who served in the armed forces. “I hope this stipend gives Gold Star families a little relief as they pursue their dreams of a higher education.”
HB 2009 passed the House unanimously last year, but was never voted on in the Republican-controlled Senate. With new leadership in the Senate this year, it is expected to receive strong support.
