Fear Friends and Neighbors,
Happy New Year! As we step into 2025, I am thrilled to continue serving as your representative and as Chair of the Technology, Economic Development, and Veterans Committee. The start of a new session always brings a sense of possibility, and this year is no exception. From boosting economic growth to expanding digital equity, enhancing emergency preparedness, and honoring our veterans, we’re tackling the issues that matter most to our community.
Here are some of the exciting topics we’ll be working on this session:
|
Economic Development and Small Business Assistance
Creating opportunities for economic growth is at the heart of what we do. One key effort is House Bill 1057, introduced by Rep. Barnard, which helps local communities tap into federal funds to drive economic development. We’re also focused on strengthening rural economies, supporting small businesses, and championing underserved communities, including minority- and women-owned enterprises. Together, we can build an economy that works for everyone.
|
Tourism and International Trade
Did you know that Washington will host the FIFA World Cup in 2026? This global event is a golden opportunity to showcase our state. We’re reviewing proposals to refresh the Washington Tourism Marketing Account (WTMA) and addressing public safety concerns, such as a policy to use rental car fees to fight human trafficking. Supporting international trade and tourism not only strengthens our economy but also highlights the incredible diversity and talent within our state.
|
Emergency Preparedness and Resiliency
Ensuring the safety of our communities is a responsibility I take very seriously. This month, our committee will hold a work session on unreinforced masonry—a critical issue for buildings in earthquake-prone areas. We’re also exploring innovative ideas like emergency co-housing solutions that include pets, a measure championed by Rep. Leavitt. It’s all about being ready for whatever challenges come our way.
|
Broadband and Digital Equity
In today’s world, access to reliable broadband is as essential as electricity. Thanks to a $15.9 million federal award and additional tribal funding, we’re making significant progress in bridging the digital divide. Projects like Rep. Shavers’ digital access bill for incarcerated students and Whidbey Telecom’s broadband expansion ensure that everyone—from urban centers to rural areas—can stay connected.
|
Emerging Technologies and Data Privacy
Innovation is driving the future, but it’s our responsibility to ensure it’s fair and secure. From supporting quantum computing advancements to championing data privacy through the People’s Privacy Act, we’re focused on protecting your rights. This session, we’ll tackle workplace surveillance transparency and AI regulation to ensure new technologies serve all Washingtonians equitably.
|
Veterans and Military Affairs
To the veterans and military families who have given so much for our country: thank you. This year, we’re advancing legislation to improve retention in the Washington National Guard and to support veterans’ service organizations. These measures, led by Reps. Leavitt and Shavers, will help ensure that veterans receive the respect, resources, and recognition they deserve.

Looking Ahead
The months ahead promise to be filled with meaningful work, and I am eager to hear from you. Your ideas and feedback are what drive our progress. Whether it’s a concern, suggestion, or just a question, my office is here to help.
Thank you for the privilege of serving you. Together, let’s make 2025 a year of progress and possibility for everyone in our district and across Washington.
Warm regards,
Rep. Cindy Ryu
