TOWN HALL INVITE & bills that made it past cutoff!

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

It’s week seven of the legislative session and we are in fiscal committees every day, determining what bills we’ll continue to push across the finish line! Only those that have successfully moved through the committee process will be considered for final passage.

In my work as Chair of the Technology, Economic Development, and Veterans Committee, I am committed to fostering innovation, strengthening our communities, and ensuring that Washington remains a leader in emerging industries. From advancing artificial intelligence protections to expanding resources for veterans, my colleagues and I are working hard to pass legislation that will positively impact people across the state.

Here are some of the key bills we’ve been working on in these areas:

Economic Development & Small Business Growth

House Bill 1360 – Quantum Economic Development

Quantum computing has the potential to transform industries and create jobs, and Washington is uniquely positioned to be a leader in this space. This bill helps establish a framework for quantum technology development and economic growth, ensuring our state remains at the forefront of innovation.

House Bill 1595 – Economic Development Strategic Plan

To keep Washington competitive, this bill directs the state to create a long-term economic development plan. By coordinating statewide efforts and investing in key industries, we can drive sustainable growth, support small businesses, and create new job opportunities.

House Bill 1860 – Supply Chain Competitiveness

Strengthening Washington’s supply chain is essential for economic stability. This bill focuses on improving infrastructure, reducing logistical bottlenecks, and ensuring businesses have the resources they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving global market.

Technology & Consumer Protection

House Bill 1168 – Artificial Intelligence Information Act

As AI continues to shape our world, it is critical that we have transparency and accountability. This bill requires greater oversight on how AI systems are used and ensures the public has access to clear, accurate information about their capabilities and risks.

House Bill 1170 – AI Content Notices

With AI-generated content becoming more common, this bill establishes guidelines for labeling and transparency, ensuring that consumers can distinguish between AI-generated and human-created content.

House Bill 1483 – Right to Repair Digital Electronics

Too often, consumers are forced to replace expensive electronic devices because repair options are limited. This bill expands access to necessary parts and repair information, making it easier and more affordable to fix digital electronics, reducing e-waste and saving consumers money.

House Bill 1503 – Advancing Digital Equity

The digital divide disproportionately affects rural and underserved communities. This bill promotes access to affordable broadband and digital literacy programs, ensuring that everyone in Washington has the opportunity to participate in an increasingly digital world.

Veterans & Emergency Preparedness

House Bill 1102 – Veteran Support and Services

This bill expands access to critical resources for veterans, ensuring they have the necessary support to transition successfully into civilian life. From housing assistance to mental health care, this legislation strengthens services available to those who have served our country.

House Bill 1541 – Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee

This bill improves the coordination of veteran services by enhancing the Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee’s ability to provide strategic guidance and support on key policy issues affecting veterans in Washington.

House Bill 1738 – Veteran Benefits Access

Many veterans are unaware of the benefits they are entitled to. This bill improves outreach and accessibility, making it easier for veterans to connect with programs that provide healthcare, financial assistance, and other essential services.

House Bill 1201 – Emergency Shelters for Pets

During emergencies, many people are forced to choose between seeking shelter and staying with their pets. This bill ensures that emergency shelters can accommodate pets, removing a barrier that prevents people from accessing life-saving resources during crises.

House Bill 1271 – State Fire Service Deployment

Washington has faced devastating wildfires in recent years, and our state fire service plays a crucial role in responding to these emergencies. This bill strengthens deployment strategies, ensuring that our fire services are better prepared to respond swiftly and effectively.

Be Prepared: New ID Requirements for Travel

The deadline for obtaining your REAL ID for air travel is fast approaching – May 7, 2025. After this date you will need a REAL ID or another approved form of identification to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities. If you haven’t already, make sure to visit your local DMV to apply for REAL ID. There are other acceptable forms of identification that can be used as well, including a valid passport, which can be applied for at the Snohomish County Treasurer’s Office.
