Book banning, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, and a 2024 session update

Rep. Stonier with the Moms Rising book truck at the Capital on Tuesday 1/23.

Dear friends and neighbors,

The 2024 session is shaping up to be very productive. We’ve already passed 21 bills off the House floor and sent them to the Senate, with many more on the way. Just like last year, there is a big focus on creating and promoting affordable housing, addressing the opioid crisis, and behavioral health treatment funding.

We’re also talking about books.

We know that banning and burning books are go-to moves for dictators around the world, especially when they target minority authors and topics. As an educator, I know how important it is for kids to have access to books that are written by or feature characters who look like them or have common experiences. That’s why I am proud to sponsor HB 2331 that would prohibit the removal of books from classrooms and libraries through discriminatory practices.

You can learn more about the bill by watching testimony from myself and others in the House Education Committee.

We always say yes to Dolly!

In the words of Dolly Parton, “You can never get enough books into the hands of enough children.” I’m so excited that we were able to secure funding to continue Dolly’s Imagination Library program in Washington. Every month, the Imagination Library mails books to nearly 2 million kids worldwide to encourage literacy.

I love this program (and Dolly) and I’m so glad we can support Dolly’s Imagination Library in Washington! Last year, I passed a bill taking this program statewide and you can learn more about the program here.

Thank you for following my work and I encourage you to reach out if you have any questions or follow my Facebook page for more news from the 49th District.
