Fair Taxation, Travel Notice, and Visitors!

Dear friends and neighbors,

Washington’s budget is a reflection of our values—we invest in education, healthcare, housing, and essential services because we believe in taking care of our communities. But the reality is that we can’t fund these priorities without making tough choices. As we work to build a responsible and sustainable budget, we must balance the need for vital investments with the financial realities facing our state. That means coupling smart, strategic spending cuts with thoughtful revenue reforms to ensure we can meet today’s needs while planning for a stronger future. We cannot afford to let outdated tax policies and inefficient spending stand in the way of progress. By taking a balanced approach, we can continue to support Washingtonians while making our budget more sustainable and equitable for generations to come.

As we move further into 2025, we’ve now reached policy cutoff in the Legislature—a critical deadline that determines which bills move forward and which do not. This moment marks a shift from introducing new legislation to refining and advancing policies that will have the greatest impact on our communities.

Ensuring a Fair and Accountable Tax System

This week, I’d like to highlight HB 1995, sponsored by Rep. Brianna Thomas, as part of our ongoing effort to restructure Washington’s tax code—bit by bit—to make it more fair, transparent, and accountable. This bill takes a closer look at tax preferences, ensuring they serve the public good rather than creating unnecessary loopholes. By systematically reviewing exemptions and incentives, we can determine which policies truly benefit Washingtonians and which may need to be reformed or phased out. As Chair of the Finance Committee, I am committed to building a tax system that prioritizes equity and fiscal responsibility. While HB 1995 didn’t advance this year, it is an important step in that process. Next year, we’ll continue work on this bill to ensure that every tax policy is working toward a stronger, more sustainable future for our state.

Traveling this year? The REAL ID deadline is May 7, 2025

If you’re flying in 2025, pay attention to new federal requirements. Why? Because if you don’t, they won’t let you on the plane.

REAL ID is a federal law, though Washington state has worked hard to help people get the ID they need to comply and fly.

Of course, you still need a passport to fly overseas. That hasn’t changed. What’s new is the requirements for flying domestically. The days of showing your driver’s license and getting through security are over.

Here’s what you can use:

  • U.S. Passport
  • U.S. Passport Card
  • U.S. Military ID
  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
  • Federally recognized tribal-issued photo ID
  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
  • Foreign Passport

Before your buy a plane ticket, please make sure your passport is current—or that you have another form of acceptable identification.

Welcoming Twin Pages from Our District!

twins

Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting twin sisters from our district who participated in the House Page Program! The program offers students a hands-on experience in state government, allowing them to learn about the legislative process while assisting with daily operations at the Capitol. It was wonderful to see these bright young leaders engage in public service together—I can’t wait to see what they do next!
