Women’s History Month; ending gun violence; town hall

Dear friends and neighbors,

Happy Women’s History Month! Did you know that there are more women serving in the Washington State Legislature than at any point in our state’s history? It’s an honor to do this incredible work alongside so many diverse, unstoppable women! 💪

Ending Gun Violence

Twelve years ago, my life changed forever when a gunman opened fire at a constituent event of my boss and mentor, Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. Six people lost their lives that day, including my friend and colleague, Gabe Zimmerman. Gabe is the first Congressional staffer to be killed in the line of duty.

Gun violence is now the leading cause of death for children in America. As a mother and as a person who lost someone I love to gun violence, this is devastating to me. That’s why it’s critical the Legislature pass gun safety measures as editorialized this week in the Seattle Times.

Simply put, these bills will save lives:

  • HB 1240 bans the sale & distribution of assault weapons. Watch my floor speech above.
  • HB 1143 my bill to require a 10-day waiting period and safety training to purchase a firearm.
  • SB 5078 holds gun manufacturers accountable for the destruction they cause.
  • HB 1230 provides all families easily accessible information about safely storing firearms and medications on school websites.
