Dear friends & neighbors,
During this season of thanks, I am grateful for you! It is an honor to serve our community in the Washington State House of Representatives.
Please enjoy this update on our ongoing work in Olympia.
Fighting Food Insecurity
688,170 people in Washington are food insecure – 1 in 5 are kids. These are our neighbors, students in our children’s classes, people commuting with us on the bus.
As a member of the Food Fighters Caucus and a monthly volunteer at the Ballard Food Bank, I am passionate about ending hunger in our state. That’s why I joined my colleagues to fight for $95 million in food assistance programs and $85 million to expand access to free meals for 90,000 more K-12 students in Washington.
I was also proud to support HB 1559 to remove barriers for college students’ access to basic needs like food, water, shelter, clothing, physical and mental health and childcare so students can better focus on staying in school and planning for the future.
Many of us may not realize the grave disparities that exist in our own communities, but we must continue to get the food and resources our neighbors need to thrive.
Investing in a Clean Energy Future
Exciting news! 🚨♻️👀‼️ Washington has now raised $1.5 billion from the state’s biggest polluters to invest in projects that reduce carbon emissions and help prepare our communities for droughts, flooding and other threats triggered by the climate crisis. Projects will focus on supporting overburdened communities, carbon sequestration, clean energy, energy efficiency in homes and buildings and salmon recovery.
Our goal is to be carbon free by 2050 to meet the targets in the Paris Agreement aimed at limiting global warming. As a member of the House Environment and Energy Committee, urgently addressing climate change remains one of my top priorities and I am energized by these latest investments that will build a resilient, equitable clean energy future for our state.
