Earth Day successes in #waleg!

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Happy Earth Day! 🌎 The first Earth Day in 1970 mobilized millions of Americans to create the modern environmental movement. Join me at Golden Gardens Park this Sunday from 11am-2pm for a community clean up event to pick up litter and learn more how we can reduce waste. Look for the blue Seattle Surfrider tent!

As a member of the Environment & Energy Committee and a mom of two young kids, I’m committed to fighting for policies that reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for the impacts of climate change.

That’s why I was proud to vote for Washington’s landmark Climate Commitment Act (CCA) in 2021 which uses a market-based cap-and-invest approach to require polluters to reduce harmful emissions and fund programs for climate resiliency, clean energy, and environmental health. This is truly a transformative opportunity for environmental and societal equity.

This legislative session, we took big steps to protect our children’s health and promote cleaner air by adopting legislation to replace diesel school buses with electric alternatives. Our supplemental transportation budget funds electric vehicle charging infrastructure, public transit, pedestrian safety infrastructure and new electric ferries. We also passed a groundbreaking initiative to link Washington’s carbon market with California and Quebec and cut methane gases in our state by diverting food and yard waste from landfills.

In addition, the 2024 supplemental operating budget invests an additional $335 million for clean energy programs, protection of critical ecosystems and habitats, and salmon production and recovery.
