Callan introduces legislation to help vulnerable children

OLYMPIA –On Tuesday, January 29, the House Human Services & Early Learning Committee heard legislation sponsored by Rep. Lisa Callan (D-Issaquah) that aims to increase access to resources for children who are homeless or vulnerable. HB 1574 would expand the eligibility for children who are homeless or vulnerable to access childcare and early learning programs.

“Research consistently shows that investments made at an early age give our youth their best chance to thrive in school and life,” said Callan. “Providing access to quality preschool, early-learning supports, and childcare for our most vulnerable kids are the best investments a state can make to mitigate and prevent barriers to a healthy, stable, and thriving future for our children.”

The House Human Services & Early Learning Committee will likely take action on HB 1574 early next week. If passed, the legislation will likely head to the House Appropriations Committee, the next step in the legislative process.
