Legislative Update: Welcome to the 2025 Session; traffic safety priorities

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

We are now in week two of the 2025 Legislative Session and I am excited to be back on campus working with my legislative colleagues. This is a long session year lasting 105 days. During this session we will pass our biennial operating, capital, and transportation budgets. This will require some difficult decision-making, but we are working together to find solutions that work for all Washingtonians.

I am proud to continue my work as Vice Chair of the House Transportation Committee, as well as serving as a member on the Education, Consumer Protection & Business, and Technology, Economic Development & Veterans committees.

Traffic safety priorities

Much of my work on the Transportation Committee is focused on traffic safety. That includes making the roads safer for drivers and pedestrians. That is why I’ve introduced HB 1315 to lower the legal blood alcohol content (BAC) limit for driving from .08% to .05%. According to the Washington State Standard, in 2023 Washington saw 809 traffic deaths, the most since 1990. Of those 809 deaths, impaired drivers were involved in about half. Lowering the legal limit will save lives, and I am proud to help move this legislation forward. I will keep you updated on this bill as it progresses. You can hear more about my priorities this year and other bills that I am working on in the video below.
