Public Safety Caucus Update

I had the pleasure of hosting Ann Davison, an esteemed attorney from the Seattle City Attorney’s office, at a recent Public Safety Caucus meeting. Her insightful presentation shed light on the essential pillars of an effective criminal justice system: swift response to criminal activity, consistency of accountability, and meaningful behavioral health intervention. She emphasized the importance of these principles in ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities. Additionally, she outlined actionable steps for the legislature to consider, including prioritizing policies that do no harm, supporting the tools of the criminal justice system, and addressing the breakdown of the state’s behavioral health system. I am grateful for Ann’s expertise and perspective, and I look forward to working together to implement positive change in our criminal justice system.

Advancing Police Accountability and Training: Supporting the Washington State University Social Interaction Lab

I am thrilled to share that I submitted a budget proviso to provide funding to support the Washington State University Social Interaction Lab’s groundbreaking work. This lab is working on a project to analyze body camera footage from traffic stops, providing invaluable insights into what makes these interactions safe and effective. By examining this data, we can better understand best practices for law enforcement and ultimately improve police training. This initiative aligns with our commitment to promoting transparency and accountability within our police department. Together, we are taking proactive steps to ensure the safety and well-being of all members of our community.

Securing a Healthy Future for Washington

The Climate Commitment Act (CCA), passed in 2021, stands as a crucial investment in our state’s health and safety. We understand the dangers of polluted air – particularly for low-income communities and communities of color – and the long-term health consequences it carries.

The choice is clear: invest in our well-being now through CCA funds or face mounting healthcare costs and diminished lifespans.
