OLYMPIA – Rep. Mari Leavitt, D-University Place, is focused on expanding career and technical education throughout the state in her role as Vice Chair of the College & Workforce Development. The newly renamed committee considers policy that affects Washington’s public and independent colleges, universities, community and technical colleges, and private career schools. From financial aid and tuition to workforce development and apprenticeships, Rep. Leavitt will have a key role in helping students achieve their workforce training or higher education goals.
“Our students are leaving high school yearning to find a path that sets them up to achieve the American Dream and at the same time, non-traditional students and adults are returning to the education system ready to begin the journey toward a new career or advanced skills. It is incumbent upon lawmakers to help them find that path and give them the tools to be successful. Whether it is a four-year degree, an apprenticeship, or a certificate program, our students in all stages of life deserve a shot to reach their goals,” said Leavitt.
Leavitt continued, “In many places across Washington, the economy is not prosperous for workers. That is why we must provide opportunities for working families to get the education and learn the skills to find good-paying jobs. I am excited to get to work for them.”
In addition to her work on College & Workforce Development, Leavitt serves on the Capital Budget and Housing, Community Development & Veterans committees. The Capital Budget committee writes the state’s construction budget every two years, funding projects all across the state, including Housing Trust Fund projects. Housing, Community Development & Veterans handles legislation in those issue areas and helps guide policies to encourage stronger communities, emergency preparedness and response at the state level, improved housing, and better access to earned services for veterans.
Constituents are encouraged to reach out to Rep. Leavitt’s office and contact her legislative assistant, Nora Selander, on any issues or problems and can reach Ms. Selander at Nora.Selander@leg.wa.gov or at 360-786-7890.
