Trump administration’s move on visas is ‘dream-crashing’ for Indian students and families
When Prakriti Dahiya arrived at the University of Washington last year, it was the culmination of a family dream. No one else had made the journey from India to attend college in the United States. Her parents took out loans and gave up vacations to afford the fees. The investment would be worth it, they hoped: Perhaps Prakriti might even end up working at one of Seattle’s famed technology companies after graduation. Continue reading at The Washington Post. COVID-19 statistics in Washington state depicting new cases per day, case rate by race, and cases among age groups.

After 6 months and little progress controlling the pandemic, return to normal remains out of sight
It’s been nearly half a year since the first case of COVID-19 was identified in the United States, in the Puget Sound area, on Jan. 21. While the state eventually shut down in late March in an effort to slow the disease’s spread, Washington began the gradual process of reopening after little more than a month. The fight for racial justice is a lifelong commitment, not a summer job
“I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear.” My old UCLA coach, John Wooden, used to quote that Walt Whitman poem often, and I’ve been hearing its echoes on the streets lately. The people out protesting systemic racism and vowing change are “singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs” about the America that could be — that should be. King County Health Department’s Latest COVID-19 Report: Things Are Bad

Friday, July 10

Nicholas Hartmann, center, shows a fish to a customer as he works at the Pure Food Fish Market on Tuesday, July 7, 2020, at Pike Place Market in Seattle. Tuesday was the first day of a new statewide order that requires people to wear masks or other facial coverings inside businesses in hopes of slowing the spread of the coronavirus. Business owners who fail to refuse service to customers who don’t wear masks can face fines or lose their business license, but some business owners have raised concerns about turning away customers. County pausing for phased reopening may remain if cases climb
Washington’s secretary of health said Wednesday if cases of coronavirus continue to increase, it was unlikely that a current statewide pause for counties looking to advance from their current stage of reopening will be lifted at the end of the initial two-week time frame.
