OLYMPIA – Earlier today, Governor Ferguson signed House Bill 1747 into law, sponsored by Rep. Lillian Ortiz-Self (D-Mukilteo) to expand employment protections under Washington’s Fair Chance Act.
“One in five adults in Washington has a conviction or arrest record, often becoming an unfair barrier to employment,” said Rep. Ortiz-Self. “This bill ensures people are judged by their skills and experience, not just their past.”
The law opens more doors for qualified workers, reduces recidivism, and strengthens communities by supporting successful reentry into the workforce. Washington moves one step closer to justice, equity, and economic opportunity for all.
The bill takes effect 90 days after adjournment of the session.
