There’s great joy in being able to combine teaching with legislation to protect our children from lead in school water and other public health and environmental needs. I’ve had such joy working with UW Public Health students who want to make a difference while getting their MPH and in working with my Tribal Environmental Law students and WWU College of Environment and Urban Planning students.
This linked article covers how the work of my prior students Molly Codding, Claire Woolsey and Saturn McCoy provided the basis for protecting the health of public school students from lead in their school water. This has resulted in significant actions in the past couple of months. This year, I had the joy of working with another wonderful student UW COPHP MPH student, Sumayo Mohamed, whose work with me and the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition enabled us to require the state to monitor the air pollutant levels in our state’s most “overburdened” communities.
