Dear friends and neighbors,
Washington is a great place to live and work, but that is going to change if we don’t address the fundamental and systemic problem of our inequitable tax structure. Working families pay for vital government functions while the wealthiest households pay far less than they should.
Middle-class Washington families pay four times more in taxes than the highest-income households in our state, as a share of their income. For the lowest-income households – those making $24,000 or less per year, it is even worse, as they pay six times more in taxes as a share of their income.
For the last few years, the Tax Structure Work Group (TSWG) has aimed to identify options to make the Washington State tax code more fair, adequate, stable, and transparent. One solution I am advocating for is House Bill 1473 to invest in Washington families and create a more fair tax system.
Before I return to Olympia for the next legislative session, I’d like to invite you to an upcoming coffee and conversation event in Bellevue to hear your thoughts on tax reform and the wealth tax. This is also a great opportunity to discuss legislation and budget investments passed this 2023 legislative session, which concluded in April. My hope is that this can be a relaxed and inclusive setting to hear everyone’s perspective on the issue.
I look forward to seeing you soon!
