Dear friends and neighbors,
As we welcome the Year of the Snake, I am filled with a deep sense of reflection and renewal. The snake, often a symbol of wisdom, transformation, and resilience, reminds us of the ongoing journey toward growth and unity. This Lunar New Year, we come together to honor the rich traditions of the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities in Washington State, celebrating both the challenges we have overcome and the promise of the future we are building together.
As rhetoric in our country seeks to divide us, rollback protections for refugees, immigrants, and members of other vulnerable communities, it is more important than ever to remember that these efforts will not erode the fundamental fabric of who Washington is. We will continue to fight for policies that protect these values and ensure opportunity for all.
Recognizing Lunar New Year
The passage of House Bill 2209, which officially recognizes Lunar New Year as a state holiday, marks an important milestone in our commitment to inclusivity. Lunar New Year is more than just a celebration of the passing of time—it is an opportunity to honor our shared history, culture, and our enduring contributions. By recognizing this holiday, we take another step toward creating a state where everyone’s heritage is celebrated and valued.
Reflecting on the Past, Building for the Future
As we celebrate, we must also acknowledge the shadows of our history. From exclusionary laws like the Chinese Exclusion Act to the unjust internment of Japanese Americans, we remember the difficult chapters of our past. These events remind us that the work of inclusion is ongoing and requires all of us to challenge the prejudices and discrimination that persist in our society.
Each year on February 19th, we observe the Day of Remembrance, honoring the experiences of Japanese Americans and renewing our collective commitment to ensuring that such injustices are never repeated. The juxtaposition of celebration and reflection during Lunar New Year and the Day of Remembrance allows us to honor the resilience of our communities while ensuring that the lessons of the past guide us toward a more inclusive future.
Looking Ahead
The Year of the Snake encourages us to embrace the wisdom gained through experience and the courage to transform in the face of challenges. As the first refugee elected to the Washington State Legislature, I have seen firsthand the power of one voice to drive change. It is through our collective action, compassion, and determination that we can create a future where every Washingtonian is respected and valued.
In the spirit of the Year of the Snake, I encourage you to take part in community celebrations, explore new perspectives, and continue building relationships that will strengthen the fabric of our state.
Wishing you and your loved ones a prosperous and joyful Lunar New Year. May this year bring you wisdom, growth, and the strength to overcome any challenge.
In Service,
Rep. My-Linh Thai
