Gov. Signs Bill Strengthening Medical Cannabis Tax Protections

OLYMPIA – Gov. Ferguson has signed House Bill 1341 into law, a measure that bolsters protections for medical cannabis patients in Washington. Sponsored by Rep. Sharon Wylie (D-Vancouver), the legislation improves oversight of the state’s medical cannabis tax exemption by enabling the Liquor and Cannabis Board (LCB) and the Department of Health (DOH) to share data and verify eligibility.

This update ensures the exemption from the 37% cannabis excise tax remains intact for qualifying patients while preventing potential misuse. The exemption will remain in effect until June 30, 2029.

Rep. Wylie emphasized, “This bill strikes a balance between accessibility and responsible oversight, ensuring that medical cannabis remains safe and affordable for patients who need it most.”
