Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I hope you’ve had some time to enjoy the summer so far. While the legislature completed our work back in April, that doesn’t mean my work has stopped. I’ve been meeting with constituents over the past two months, attending community events, and learning from colleagues across the country to continue to find ways to serve you and make progress on the most pressing issues facing our community.

As we begin to celebrate the holiday weekend, I’m reminded of the founding principles of our great country, including the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I’ve heard from many of our immigrant and LGBTQ+ neighbors who are fearful right now, especially given the actions of the federal government this year. I want to reassure you that I continue to fight to keep Washington a place where everyone can thrive, and the democratic ideals our country was founded on are protected.

This year, I was able to push House Bill 1432 across the finish line and signed into law to ensure insurance providers cover life-saving mental health care access. I also introduced legislation like House Bill 1196 to help more people hold on to their right to vote, even if they are convicted of a crime. During the interim, I continue to work on that legislation to help move it forward.
As recently as last month, House Democrats reaffirmed our commitment to staying vigilant and protecting our neighbors in the face of uncertainty. You can read statements from the Members of Color Caucus, Legislative Black Caucus, Latino Democratic Caucus, and LGBTQ+ Caucus here.
Remember, there are so many resources available. Please reach out to my office if you or anyone you know is looking for guidance.
Join me at Kitsap County Pride!
I’m excited to celebrate Kitsap County’s Pride weekend coming up later this month starting July 18th. This is just one more way that we can show up for each other and support our LGBTQ+ community members in particular.
In Washington, we believe in equity and justice and that everyone deserves safety, security, and joy, especially during a time when LGBTQ+ children and adults are experiencing relentless attacks. I recognize the emotional toll of these developments and want you to know I am listening and standing with you. Despite alarming federal actions, Washington’s strong protections remain. Access to gender-affirming care is still law in Washington, and our laws and nondiscrimination policies continue to keep people safe. We strengthened this safety net in 2025 with key legislation including:
- HB 1052: Clarifies hate crime offenses to ensure stronger legal protections.
- HB 1296: Promotes a safe and supportive public education system.
Every person deserves to live free from fear and hate, regardless of identity. To our queer youth, immigrant communities, and communities of color: you are not alone. You are loved. You belong. And you have a voice in your government. I stand with you, and all marginalized people, in the fight for a safer, more inclusive Washington.
I wish everyone a happy, healthy, and safe Independence Day and I look forward to seeing you in district!
Keep an eye out for my next e-newsletter, coming soon. As always, my office remains available during the interim, please reach out with your questions and concerns, anytime.
Sincerely,
Rep. Tarra Simmons
