Sex-trafficked children are victims and deserve help — not detention
This past summer, the world stopped for a moment in collective horror when ultrawealthy financier and registered sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was once again indicted on a charge of child sex trafficking and sexual abuse of young girls. His ties to the rich and powerful were splashed across tabloids, reflecting a garish political soap opera. Most of the media coverage focused largely on Epstein’s connections from across the political spectrum, reaching a full-blown frenzy following his sudden death. Continue reading in The Seattle Times. Everett considers ban on supportive housing
Wednesday night the Everett City Council is expected to decide whether to prohibit supportive housing in single-family residential areas. A public hearing is scheduled before the vote. At least two councilmembers have voiced concern about the recommendation by the planning commission, which if passed would halt a plan by the Everett School District and nonprofit developer Housing Hope for such a project in the Port Gardner neighborhood. Washington attorney general asks state Supreme Court to let car-tab cuts happen
The Washington State Attorney General’s Office is asking the state Supreme Court to allow voter-approved car-tab tax cuts to take effect this week, despite a lower-court ruling putting the cuts on hold. The Seattle Times reports the state filed an emergency motion Monday saying Washington voters’ wishes are being “stymied” by a King County Superior Court judge’s decision to stop Initiative 976 from taking effect while a legal fight over the initiative’s constitutionality plays out. Continue reading in the Bellingham Herald. (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren)

A Fight Is Brewing Over Diversity in Washington’s Legal Weed Market (Reeves, Stanford)
Monday, December 2
New insurance surcharge to fight wildfires to be proposed by Washington’s lands commissioner
Determined to create reliable funding to prevent and fight Washington wildfires, the state commissioner of public lands and some Democratic lawmakers are about to make a new push for revenue. A bill in the spring to hike the insurers’ tax rate for property and casualty premiums failed to gain a floor vote. Now, for the legislative session that begins next month, the idea is to add a surcharge of $5 per year to those premiums. Continue reading in The Seattle Times. (Bettina Hansen/The Seattle Times)

This spring, as President Trump defiantly rejected congressional attempts to investigate his conduct and policies, Representative Jerrold Nadler of New York, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, asked his Democratic colleagues on his famously voluble panel a loaded question: When all is said and done, given the facts before us, are we heading toward impeaching this president? Report recommends centralized gun background check system
A new report recommends Washington create a centralized system for gun-purchase background checks. Court grants preliminary injunction putting hold on $30 car tabs
The court has granted a preliminary injunction putting a hold on the $30 car tab initiative I-967. In granting the injunction, King County Superior Court Judge Marshall Ferguson wrote that the State of Washington is “enjoined from implementing or enforcing 1-976.” The judge wrote that the state “shall continue to collect all fees, taxes, and other charges that would be subject to or impacted by 1-976 were it not stayed, and shall distribute those funds to local municipalities and political subdivisions as appropriate pursuant to existing laws, regulations, contracts, obligations, policies, and procedures.” Read and watch more on KIRO7.

New rules will govern investigations of police shootings in Washington, but how much will change
The Washington Criminal Justice Training Commission, after a year’s worth of bitter and contentious public hearings, is poised to debate and adopt rules to bring about sweeping changes to how police statewide will investigate instances when officers use deadly force. However, some sponsors and supporters of the ballot initiative — many of whom have lost family to police violence — remain skeptical that the changes will really change anything at all.
