In August, The New York Times Magazine published a special edition devoted to the centrality of African slavery in American history. Slavery “is sometimes referred to as the country’s original sin,” wrote Editor Jake Silverstein in the preamble to the magazine, “but it is more than that: It is the country’s very origin.” The Pacific Northwest is no exception. An iceberg the size of Los Angeles just broke off Antarctica
A gigantic iceberg has broken off from the Amery Ice Shelf in East Antarctica. The iceberg, named D-28, is over 600 square miles in size, which is bigger than the city of Los Angeles. It’s equal to about 27 Manhattan Islands. Read more in USA Today

Free entrance at national parks, forests and trails Saturday
Head outside Saturday as a vast number of trails, parks and forests will be free of charge. The National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will all waive entrance and parking fees for the 2019 event Saturday, Sept. 28. Juul Labs, the big e-cigarette maker that is embroiled in controversy involving the rising underage use of vaping products, announced Wednesday that its chief executive officer is stepping down and will be succeeded by a top official from Altria, a part-owner of Juul.
